Campania & Sicily: Italian Rising Stars

Campania’s long, warm growing season and volcanic soils can combine to produce powerful and concentrated red wines (from native varieties including Aglianico and Piedirosso) and aromatic, minerally white wines (from the native Greco, Falanghina and Fiano varieties).

Sicily is part of Italy’s ancient winemaking traditions, yet this island in the Mediterranean Sea is also producing some of the country’s most modern and exciting wines. Some of Sicily’s best wines, like the rich, red Nero d’Avola and the crisp white Grillo and Inzolia, are made with native grapes. Tasting includes 6 wines.

Ancient World Wines

Most people have heard of Old World and New World wines, but what about Ancient World wines? Old World wine countries are those with long histories of modern wine-production, mainly located in Western Europe (for instance France, Italy, Spain, and Germany, among others). New World wines are those with “newer”, more recent histories of wine production, such as South Africa, Argentina, Australia, and the United States. Ancient World wines are those from countries in which knowledge and production of wine long preceded that of the Old World, such as the Republic of Georgia, Turkey, and Armenia. Petit Château: Not so much a definition but a concept. Typically used for wines that are affordable and produced by smaller, family-owned, less well-known estates. Alsatian Wines

Alsace has always been in a bit of a pickle. Its perilous location on the border of Germany and France made the area a tug-of-war for centuries. Today if you visit Alsace, you can see how the interventions of two mega empires affected the area through its architecture and the presence of both French and German languages.

The food and the wine of Alsace is also a bit of a mish mash. For instance, Germanic grape varieties like Gewurztraminer and Riesling dominate the French départment, but in Alsace they are produced in a very different style. Tasting of six wines.

Spanish Fine Wines

Spanish Fine Wines

Spain may not be the first wine region to come to mind when you think of expensive, luxury wine. But, there are several expensive, investment-grade wines that’ll fit right into your wine collection!

The Spanish red wines typically boast a bold structure, crisp freshness, a red fruit flavor, and other subtle wine tasting notes that include oak and spice. The finest reds come from sun-drenched regions like Ribera del Duero, Rioja, Levante, and Priorat. The grapes from these regions are harvested late and macerated longer, and the wines are aged in new French oak.

Spanish white wines from Rioja and Catalonia usually offer crisp minerality, a fruity complexity, medium acidity, and a citrus fruit flavor. However, the most delicate Spanish whites come from Galicia. The region is cool, boasts fertile decomposed schist soils, and has maritime influence from the Atlantic Ocean. The wines from this region boast earthy notes that express terroir.

Right Bank vs Left Bank Bordeaux

There is a big difference between wines from the Right Bank and Left Bank, or should I say, there are several important distinctions between Bordeaux wines from the Left Bank and Bordeaux from the Right Bank. The terroir and soil are different. The percentages of grapes planted are not the same.

The culture of each region differs and because each area has its own unique style and character, as you might expect, the wines are quite different as well. The wines from each area taste, smell, feel and age differently. And that is just to get things started.
